Take The Train!

Summertime fun off the beaten path

I have been looking for vacation spots that are unique, fun and inexpensive. I traveled frequently (e.g., weekly!) for work years ago and since I have changed careers, I have found that traveling by air for pleasure has lost its luster for me. I no longer want to wait in long TSA lines, endure plane delays or cancellations, or even sit in a plane so overbooked you can hardly breathe. When I traveled overseas, I found that trains were a calm, relaxing way to move about the country and have begun to explore this option here in the United States. We have a great train network that I believe is underutilized. If you have a fear of flying, or just want to slow the pace a bit and try a unique trip, I have some ideas for you! Here are three unique places in the United States where you can unwind and enjoy some leisure time:

Sedona, Arizona: Take an Amtrak train to Flagstaff, Arizona, and then rent a car or take a shuttle to Sedona. Known for its stunning red rock formations and serene desert landscapes, Sedona offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, meditation, and rejuvenation. You can explore the numerous hiking trails, indulge in spa treatments, or simply soak in the breathtaking views. Don’t miss the chance to experience a sunset over the red rocks, which is truly magical.

Mackinac Island, Michigan: Hop on an Amtrak train to Traverse City, Michigan, and then catch a ferry to Mackinac Island. This charming island, located in Lake Huron, is a care-free paradise where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Relax by the waterfront, rent a bicycle to explore the scenic trails, or indulge in some delicious fudge from one of the island’s famous fudge shops. Mackinac Island offers a peaceful retreat with its Victorian architecture, horse-drawn carriages, and stunning natural beauty.

Whitefish, Montana: Take an Amtrak train to Whitefish, Montana, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. This picturesque mountain town offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and relaxation. In the summer, you can explore Glacier National Park, go hiking or mountain biking on the scenic trails, or enjoy a leisurely boat ride on Whitefish Lake. After a day of exploring, unwind with a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants or relax by the cozy fireplace in a mountain lodge. Whitefish is the ideal destination for nature lovers seeking tranquility and breathtaking scenery.

Each of these destinations offers a unique opportunity to unwind and recharge away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you’re seeking desert tranquility, island charm, or mountain serenity, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for a relaxing summer getaway by train.

Find time to take a short trip somewhere! You won’t regret it.
