Gas Pump Savings!

My kids make fun of me for picking up pennies when I see them. I like to save money and finding a penny (sometimes a quarter) is a treasure. Everything in expensive these days and every cent matters. Seasonal skyrocketing gas prices add unnecessary stress to daily commutes and road trips. Want to beat the system? I am going to share with you a few tips today that will have you save money at the gas pump. Buckle up!

NOTE: This is the second in a series of blogs to help my readers save cash and live better lives on less. The goal is to help people have a higher quality of life without the expense.

Use Technology to Avoid Traffic: There is nothing more frustrating that getting stuck in traffic. Besides avoiding traffic jams, use your GPS to bypass construction (hey, the orange cone is American’s Summer mascot). The GPS on your iPHone or android device may suggest alternative routes that will get you to your destination more quickly. The website www.traffic.com is a great resource, too. If you drive the same route regularly, you can sign up to have traffic alerts sent to you via email or text.

Compare Gas Prices: Before filling up, check the prices at different gas stations in your area with the internet. Use apps or websites that provide real-time gas price information to find the cheapest option. Three great gas apps you should consider using are GasBuddy (gives local gas prices and savings cents per gallon when you use their card), Upside (free app that connects you to deals on gas in your area), Google Maps (gives gas station prices and directions in one place).

Use Gas Rewards Programs: Many gas stations offer rewards programs or loyalty cards that allow you to earn points or discounts on fuel purchases. Take advantage of these programs to save money over time. Turn the pump handle 180 degrees after pumping gas This forces a bit more gas into the tank. Also, tighten the fuel cap firmly before you leave.

Combine Errands: Plan your trips efficiently to minimize the number of miles you drive. Combining errands into one trip can help you save on gas by reducing the overall distance you need to travel.

Drive Efficiently: Slow down. Avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, rapid acceleration, and hard braking, as these can decrease your fuel efficiency. Driving at a steady speed and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles can help you save gas.

Get Rid of Excess Weight: The roof rack and extra stuff in the trunk adds weight to your vehicle and decreases your mileage. When not in use, just remove it.

Keep Your Vehicle Well-Maintained: Regular maintenance, such as keeping your tires properly inflated, changing the air filter, and getting regular tune-ups, can improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and save you money on gas in the long run.

Consider Alternative Transportation: Whenever possible, consider alternatives to driving, such as walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation. This can help you save money on gas and reduce your carbon footprint.

Use Fuel Efficient Vehicles: If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, consider choosing one with high fuel efficiency or alternative fuel options such as hybrid or electric vehicles. While the upfront cost may be higher, you’ll save money on gas over time.

Use Cashback or Rewards Credit Cards: Some credit cards offer cashback or rewards points on gas purchases. Using one of these cards can help you save money every time you fill up.

By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can effectively save money at the gas pump over time. Every cent matters!
