Embracing Prosdechomai: Welcoming with the Heart

Language has a way of holding treasures that go deeper than surface meanings. One such treasure in the New Testament is the Greek word prosdechomai (προσδέχομαι). Found in several passages of Scripture, this word carries layers of meaning that can transform the way we understand hospitality, faith, and God’s promises.

What Does Prosdechomai Mean?

At its core, prosdechomai is a verb meaning “to receive, welcome, or wait for eagerly.” It combines two parts:

pros — “toward” or “facing forward.” dechomai — “to take, receive, accept.”

Together, the word paints a picture of someone not passively waiting, but actively leaning forward with expectancy—like a host who throws open the door, arms wide, ready to embrace a beloved guest.

Prosdechomai in Scripture

The New Testament uses prosdechomai in ways that reveal its richness:

Welcoming Christ Himself In Luke 2:25, Simeon is described as a man “prosdechomai-ing” the consolation of Israel. He wasn’t simply waiting in line—he was actively, faithfully expecting God’s promise to arrive, and when he held the infant Jesus, that expectancy turned to joy. Welcoming Others In Titus 2:13, believers are urged to live while “prosdechomai-ing” the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of Christ. This isn’t just waiting for heaven but living every day with a posture of openness and hope. Welcoming the Stranger In passages like Mark 15:43, Joseph of Arimathea is described as someone who was “prosdechomai-ing the kingdom of God.” His faith led him to act courageously in welcoming Christ’s body after the crucifixion.

In every context, prosdechomai conveys a readiness to receive what God is sending—whether it is His Son, His kingdom, or His promises.

Why Prosdechomai Matters for Us

It challenges our posture. Do we live as though God might show up at any moment—with hope, joy, and readiness—or do we let busyness dull our expectancy? It reframes hospitality. Welcoming isn’t about entertaining; it’s about making space in our lives and hearts for others, even when inconvenient. True hospitality flows from prosdechomai—a readiness to embrace people as Christ embraced us. It deepens our faith. Faith isn’t passive. Prosdechomai reminds us that faith leans forward, looking for God’s hand in ordinary moments, waiting with confidence that His promises are trustworthy.

Practicing Prosdechomai Today

Welcome interruptions as possible invitations from God. Prepare your heart daily as though Christ might knock on your door. Receive people—family, friends, strangers—not as obligations but as opportunities to show the love of Christ. Wait with expectancy in prayer, trusting that God hears and responds in His time.

Closing Reflection

Prosdechomai invites us to live with open doors and open hearts. It’s the posture of Simeon holding the Christ child, Joseph of Arimathea stepping forward in courage, and the church awaiting the return of Christ. To embrace prosdechomai is to cultivate a life of welcome, hope, and holy expectancy—where every moment is a doorway through which God might enter.
